ouverture-serre-chevalierThis Spring promises to be one of the busiest yet in Serre Chevalier with a number of festivals and events being hosted in the valley not far from you're friendly ski shop in Chantemerle.

affiche-derby-serreche_0First to grace our slopes is the Classical Music Festival, dedicated to the famous composer Jacques Offenbach. Offenbach was a German born French composer awarded the Legion d'Honour and French citizenship by Napoleon for his contribution to Opera. His operettas are still popular today and were said to have had a powerful influence on later composers such as, Johann Strauss and Arther Sullivan. The Classical Music Festival will be held in Serre Chevalier from the 12th-17th of March 2012.

From the 22nd-25th of March is the Snowboard Kids French Championships. Organised by the Federation Francais de Ski (FFS), children from across France are invited to compete. Disciplines covered are the parallel giant slalom, snowboardcross and freestyle (for the older category). However this is as much a spectators event as it is a contestants with BBQ's and music events arranged, and you never know, you may see the next Xavier de le Rue.

Brought back by popular demand in 2008 after eight years neglected, the Serre Chevalier Derby is a freestyle competition with a difference. Held 2 days after the Derby de La Meije the Serre Chevalier Derby is a freestyle competition with a difference, for one thing anyone can enter, and another is the chosen course, or lack of it. The first run consists of a starting gate and a finish line with the contestants asked to reach the end however way they like but as quickly as they can, this is where the first cut occurs and the slower contestants are told remain comfy in their chairs after lunch.

The afternoon session involves a set course, original each year this course runs both on and off piste and it is again the contestants ability to reach the end the quickest that'll place them on the podium. This is a fantastic event to both compete in and watch. Registration will be held on the 7th of April with the event starting from 8.30 on the 8th of April.

For those just coming to relax and enjoy some fantastic spring skiing you can rent skis in Chantemerle direct in store or have fittings and equipment conducted and delivered to your chalet or hotel.
